The Ordinary Tuesday When Everything Changed.

After missing the snooze button, I had to rush out of bed to get to work on time. 

Thankfully, I made it on time - and didn’t manage to forget anything. I got my phone, my laptop, my bluetooth mouse and keyboard - wait where’s my super clean miracle greens smoothie?

I had been taking this greens powder with my smoothie religiously for the past 185 days (I kept count) - it’s organic and… well it's green so it must be healthy.

Looking back, I realized I had no clue why I was still taking this powder. It started with some podcast recommendation, but somewhere along the way it just became mindless routine.

I wanted to continue my healthy habits, so I went to a smoothie bar during lunch. 

Walking in the store, the scent of the fruits instantly hit me. It was amazing. I remember looking at the menu with awe - so many things to choose from. I was like a child in a candy store. 

Waiting in line, I was extremely excited. 

That’s when it happened. That’s when I saw it.

It was my fault. It is your fault. We are all responsible.

The employee was routinely slicing the fruits up. But seeing it first hand was disturbing. 

The amount of produce that didn’t make it into the smoothie, but instead got dumped in the trash made my stomach curl. Almost half of the fruit was in the trash, and the other half in the blender. 

Half!?

I remember seeing the trash can fill up as quick as my excitement disappeared. 

When it was my turn to order, I nervously asked - “excuse me, why is almost all of the fruit going to the trash…?”

He shrugged. “It’s too gross and bitter. Nobody can have it.”

I accepted that answer and continued ordering. After all, I do the same at home. I throw fruit peels in the trash all the time - you can't expect me to eat that.

But My Mind Kept Racing…

When I returned back to my desk, I couldn’t get the image of all that produce just… wasted. I could barely focus on my work, which was a problem since I had a deadline. But I had to get to the bottom of it.

I had to justify all that waste - my mind couldn’t sit still otherwise. So, I went to Google. I searched up food waste statistics. It had to be something so small and negligible - right?

Wrong. 

$400 Billion.

Over $400 Billion In The United States - Alone.

I thought back to my super clean miracle greens powder - “how much produce was wasted just by making my “organic” greens powder…?”

I would love to have been able to ignore that thought. But I couldn’t. It made me feel sick. 

I thought it couldn’t get any worse - but learning that the produce parts we trash have more nutrients than the parts we actually consume, was the final nail in the coffin.

Anti-Cancer, Anti-Bacterial, Anti-Inflammatory… Wasted.

The parts of the fruit we usually trash - like the peel, usually contain more nutrients than the flesh inside.

Did you know: a compound called “d-limonene” is anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, supports gut health, immune health and your nervous system - and citrus peels contain it in huge concentrations (more so than any other fruit!)

But it tastes gross - so we trash it.

And even worse, let it contribute to our hundred billion dollar food waste problem…

It infuriated me.

I had to do something.
